Sat Feb 28 2009: Swimming with the Dolphins... not

I had a dream this morning.

In it, I was back in Toronto and riding out of our garage to go someplace. I turned into the main road and suddenly realized I had automatically made my way into the left lane! I was now riding on the wrong side of the road and for some strange reason, I couldn't veer back into the right-hand side. Some strange force was compelling me to KeepLeftKeepLeftKeepLeft and I could see I was riding into oncoming traffic!

Then I woke up and realized I was still in New Zealand. Everything was going to be okay, at least for the next 24 hours.

We're riding to Akaroa again today, recreating our first day's ride to salvage our failed attempt to swim with the dolphins in Kaikoura.

And we're off to search for dophins in Akaroa harbour

We boarded a boat with a bunch of German tourists and headed out into the waters in Akaroa harbour. The skies had darkened considerably as the boat went from spot to spot trying to search for dolphins. Apparently they are quite curious, so you have to make a lot of interesting noises while in the water, like clicking rocks together, humming and whistling underwater. I think it was just a ploy to see how silly they could make the tourists look...

The water was freezing. We went to a couple of spots, and after one unsuccessful attempt to attract any dolphins, I opted to stay in the boat and take pictures instead. Neda was a bit more brave:

Well, the trip out to the frigid waters was for nothing, except a touch of of hypothermia! Swimming with the dolphins will have to wait for another trip... :( After a nice meal in Akaroa, we hopped on the bikes and made our last motorcycle ride back to Christchurch. It was a bit of an anti-climactic finish to the trip, but at least on the way back it didn't rain!
