Sat Aug 18 2007: Munich

Our last day of freedom, and a full day at that! No motorcycles to ship, no hotel doors to knock on, just one entire day where we can roam around the city. So what do we do? Sleep in! The only reason we woke up at 10:15AM, was to catch breakfast down in the hotel cafe. We've made friends with Katja, the receptionist/cook/waitress/maid who is really nice, in fact, Munich has the reputation of being the most friendly German city, and it doesn't disappoint. So many times, we've been staring at a subway map or trying to read signs and some random Municher has stopped and asked if we needed assistance. How nice is that? The makeup of the city is quite cosmopolitan. Of it's 1 million inhabitants, a third of them are not German citizens. So weird not being the only non-white person walking around in a European city!

Marienplatz, downtown Munich.

There was a surprisingly large amount of construction happening downtown. Oh yeah, that's the Glockenspiel on the left all wrapped up. A lot of the literature in Munich describe it as "the most overrated show on Earth"... After breakfast, we decide to go our separate ways. Neda really wanted to do a bicycle tour of downtown Munich. There are specially-designated bike paths everywhere on the city streets in Munich, and not on the street, but right beside the sidewalk. It only took a couple of angry bicycle bell-rings for us to realize that walking on these bike-only paths was taboo. I like to expend my calories in a more leisurely fashion, so I opt to continue motorcycle gear shopping instead.

Americanos on bikes!

Neda drinking beer? We must be in Munich!

Neda's bicycle tour guide was a American from Hawaii named Frank. He spent the summers
in Munich running the bicycle tour and in the winter he went back to Hawaii to surf.

Sushi for dinner. We really miss it!

In the afternoon, we meet up in the centre of the old city and exchange stories. Although we've been downtown almost everyday since we arrived, today we took the time to stroll through the buildings and stores, and stopped to listen to live musicians playing all over the place.

Listening to an amazing violinist in the park

Neda's bike tour guide, Frank, recommended that all tourist partake in the great German
pastime of beer-drinking. The best place to trade in tourist Euros for beer is Hofbräuhaus!

Party! Beer only comes in two sizes, 1L and Wussy (0.5L).

Happiness is directly proportionate to the amount of beer in your mug

See what I mean?

Hofbräuhaus in German means Beer Rental Agency
